The Girl of Fire and Thorns

The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns #1) - Rae Carson

The Girl of Fire and Thorns was a good book. Emphasis on good. The writing was a little boring at times.

Elisa is the chosen one, the one with the godstone on her belly (basically a round diamond that's on her stomach). Those with the godstone are chosen by God to fulfill a duty, to do something great. Every century someone is chosen, but many die young. Elisa is an overweight princess. But then, she travels around in the desert for a few weeks and loses weight. The Inviernes, a tribe of vicious people who want to take over Elisa's kingdom, are attacking. Elisa joins with the neighboring kingdom and fights the Inviernes.

First of all, this was basically a story about a young girl who in the beginning is overweight and useless but then gets skinnier and becomes a hero. The writing was very plain, not a lot of details involved. Then there was this big "God" belief in this book, like a christianity feel to it. I personally don't like Elisa that much, she's too simple, the character development just wasn't there. I didn't really relate to her that much. It wasn't that dramatic and action-packed. The romance just didn't fit in the story. I know it sounds like I didn't like this book, but the truth is the writing was too simple and didnt flow smoothly. Probably because it took me 2 weeks to read it, instead of a couple of days if I really liked the book. I will finish the series though, but will probably read other books first.
